You’re an extreme sci-fi geek! You’re probably wearing your very own homemade TRON costume right now!

Well, no – I don’t have a TRON costume homemade or otherwise.  But I am geekier than your average Llama Butcher where I found this thing.  How Sci-Fi geeky are you?

Well I’ll be darned.  It’s Towel Day today!  True story – ever since I read those books I’ve NEVER traveled out of town anywhere without a towel.  I usually keep one in the car too, you just never know when it might come in handy.

Micheal Jackson wants to build a 50 foot tall robot version of himself to roam around in the desert around Las Vegas.  Found over at Hot Air.  As a city, we would never live this down.  NEVER.  What the hell is this guy doing in my town anyway?  I thought he left the U.S. for some muslim armpit didn’t he?

GAH!!

Ghost Rider February 19, 2007

I like to get to the theater early so there’s no rush to get the tickets and popcorn and whatnot and then climbing over people to get to the seats.  I also really enjoy the previews of the other movies.  So, before I start my brief review of Ghost Rider I’ll review the previews :-D.

First up – 300.  I’m sure you’ve all seen the one released on the intertubes a while back.  This was the first time I’ve seen it in the theater.  WOW.  That looks Mighty Impressive.  It’s gonna have one hell of a body count.  I saw mounds of dead people in some shots.  Big ones.  It comes out soon too – March 9th.  Definitely a must see.

Next one started off with a bunch of aerial shots of the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip at night!  The party never stops in Las Vegas!  Then, the scene turned.  Whoops!  This movie is set in a post-Apocolyptic Las Vegas!   Oh, cool!  Milla Jojovich is back for more general kickassery in Resident Evil 3: Extinction.  Yes, yes – I know.  You thought the first two sucked and you can’t believe they’ve made another.  Well, they did.  Deal with it.  It comes out sometime this fall.

Lastly, Spiderman 3.  As we’ve seen from some of the promo pictures out there we know that Spidey gets to tangle with Venom in this round, as well as the Hobgoblin again, and some other sand-dude.  Not sure what his deal is, but we’ll find out.  Anyway, it looks like it could be the best one of them all.  It’s in the summer line-up of course.

Okay, now Ghost Rider.  Three word review: It’s a Hoot!  I really enjoyed it.  Lots of cool special effects, an interesting plot, and a satisfyingly crunchy ending.  I liked the characters and Nicholas Cage was good as Johnny Blaze.  It was a little slow-paced at the beginning, but the rest of the movie more than made up for it.  There ya go.  I don’t like to write up lengthy reviews that reveal most of the movie.  I don’t like to read or watch them before I go see something either.

Ghost Rider is also one of those movies that most everyone else who goes to see films will hate.  If either of them go see it, misters Ace O’Spades and Dave at Garfield Ridge will undoubtably trash it from one end to the other.

Fear and Loathing… January 27, 2007

If you’ve ever read Hunter S. Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” you may recall that there was a break in the continuity of the narrative due to some malfunction with the taping system Thompson was using.  Modern technology being what it is, it seems that missing bit has been restored and transcribed here.

If you’ve read the book that link will  be hilarious.  If you’ve never read the book, read what’s at the link and you’ll never have to read the book.

Enjoy!

Were you ever a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000?  I was back in the early 90’s – I hardly ever missed an episode.  Then I got a job which put a serious ding in my tv watching time and I only caught it every now-and-again.  Anyway – the premise of the show (broadly speaking) was three guys watching old, bad movies and making fun of them.  Comedian Joel Hodgson was the creator and major on-screen talent, but he soon left the show and the Head Writer Mike Nelson stepped in to replace him.  MST3K is long gone of course, but I always wondered how they would do with some of the modern-day big budget movies.  Well, Mike Nelson has moved the enterprise online in the form of RiffTrax

There’s only a few selections so far to choose from, but I downloaded the one for The Matrix Friday night and watched and listened to it yesterday.  WOW!  Really funny stuff.  I re-enjoyed this movie on a whole new level, and it was well worth the three bucks.  It was also easy to purchase, download and throw on to the iPod.

The next one I think I’m going to get is Top Gun.  Amazingly, I’ve negotiated the 20 years since its release to now without ever actually watching the film.  It seems fitting that I should watch one of Tom Cruise’s career-defining movies in the twilight of that career whilst it’s being savagely mocked and made fun of.

Another Reason to Enjoy Babylon 5 October 2, 2006

Back in the early to late ’90s there was a good sci-fi television series called Babylon 5 that I really enjoyed.  One of our local AM talk radio stations recently had a shake up in ownership and programming.  What do the two have to do with each other?  Glad you asked!  It seems that the actor Jerry Doyle who played Michael Garibaldi on the series now has a Conservative talk radio show!  Unfortunately he was out sick today and had a guest host on instead so I don’t know how good he is yet.  It’s always nice to find one of those Hollywood types on our side of the political aisle for a change.

***UPDATE***

Okay, I’ve listened to portions of his shows for the last couple days.  Hmm.  He seems to occupy a similar political orbit to Michael Savage.  Conservative – but he sees little essential difference between Republicans & Democrats.  He’s one of the “Everybody in Washington is corrupt – throw them all out” type.  Eh, sounds great on paper Jerry, but extremely unlikely to happen no?

Battlestar Galactica Mormonism September 27, 2006

I was talking to one of my co-workers today and the subject of TV came up.  I remarked that I seldom watch broadcast TV anymore but that I do watch TV shows on DVD.  I mentioned HBO’s Six Feet Under and of course the new Battlestar Galactica series season 2.5.  He said that his father was a fan of the show and had told him that the much of the basic story structure was actually based on Mormon theology.  He googled BG + Mormon and got back a bunch of hits immediately.  I scanned through a couple this evening and, yeah  – it’s almost certainly true.  One of those “Huh – well waddayaknow?” moments.

Will almost certainly be made into a movie.  Via Ghost of a Flea we get this: Hollywood wants Jackson.  Dunno if they will get him – his schedule looks busy.  The fact that they are considering doing it in two parts rather than trying to cram the whole thing into one two – or even three hour movie is promising.  As I recall there’s a good break in the action near the middle of the book between Bilbo & Co. getting out of the Misty Mountains and before they venture into Mirkwood.  Mr. Flea also has a link to a You Tube “trailer” of The Hobbit.  Pretty neat.  Obviously much of the footage comes from LotR, but bonus brownie points to anyone who knows where the Smaug stuff comes from!
