So. Over the holiday weekend I brought my car in for long overdue servicing. The front brakes were shot, wheels all sorts of out of alignment and other whatnots. Total cost was in the neighborhood of 900 bucks. Then not too long after I notice steam or smoke coming out from under the hood. Service guy poked around and said, oh yeah – radiator is shot. And of course it some sort of special “dual-core” radiator that’s extra expen$ive. Basically it was going to be around another 800 bucks. Mmmf. This car is a 2001 Toyota RAV 4 with something north of 120,000 miles. It’s time to consider trading it in. I looked at another RAV 4 on the lot as I drove off and noted the MSRP. It’s a starting place to run some numbers and see what I can reasonably afford.

And so it begins. I really like the RAV 4 car design and I’m seriously considering another. This time I think I will buy brand-new instead of used.

This evening I went out to dinner with The Parental Units for Mother’s Day. Yes it’s tomorrow but Mom wanted to do it early to avoid the official Mother’s Day crowds. We had a really good dinner at Carrabba’s. Afterwards The Parental Units asked me a question that rocked me back on my heels: “Would you like to buy our house? We’ll give you a good deal on it.”

As y’all know we’re in Las Vegas which is pretty much Ground Zero of the housing bubble. I bought almost at the very top, and they bought while it was coming down, but before the real crash so we’re all in the situation where we’re “underwater” and owe more than our respective houses are worth. Their place is much, much nicer, considerably bigger and in a hell of a lot better neighborhood than mine. A few months ago I was surprised when I found out that their mortgage payment isn’t all that much more than mine. Of course they put a lot more on the down payment so they don’t owe proportionally as much as I do. They like their house a lot and have done a bunch of things to make it even nicer but it’s a two-story house. They’re getting on in years and my Mom has trouble getting up and down the stairs with her back and leg issues. She really hates those stairs, but 2nd floor is where all her quilting stuff is and where she spends most of her time. Dad doesn’t care much for the stairs either. They want to downsize anyway; it’s just too much stuff to take care of.

Still, I can’t sell my place for what these homes are going for and then make payments on the remainder of my mortgage, and make the mortgage payment on what their house can sell for at it’s current price. I make a pretty good living, but not that good. No we haven’t run the numbers on that but I don’t have to. A quick mental swag easily shows that I’m not even in the ballpark. But…they really want out of that house and also to help me out of my situation. Basically they’re indicating that they’re willing to take a big enough hit on their house to the point that I can afford both of the payments. Yeah, they have the financial reserves to do that. In effect they’re offering to give me a hefty chunk of what they were going to pass on early. We’ll need to sit down and work everything out to make sure that this is actually do-able and the other details, but…yeah, I’m taking the deal. I’ll need every penny I can scrape and save though so any and all Yorling is right out for the foreseeable future: no more Saddleback Leather, and certainly no motorcycle.

They’re also throwing in the pool table. It’s a very nice pool table. And the house has installed library shelving that Dad put in. I’m still trying to wrap my head around this.

I read this over at the American Spectator: A Lenny Skutnik Sputnik Moment and thought the author had a very good point about needing to be ready in case of a large-scale emergency. At the end he details the contents of an emergency survival backpack and I’ve decided that I’m going to do this myself.  Do read the article but I’m going to put up the contents of that kit here.

Also, I’ve decided to make my latest SBL bag into a tool bag that I’ll keep in the car.  I already know some of the stuff I wast in there: pliers, (needlenose and regular), screwdrivers, wrenches, duct tape, wire cutter, vice grips.  I’ll look around at Home Deeprot and see what else looks good. Please drop a note into the comments if you think there is something else that would be good to have too in either bag.

• A highly-detailed map of your area and a compass. You may think you know your way around, but the streets you know may be blocked. A map and compass will guide you around those obstacles. Any Boy Scout can show you how to orient the compass to the map and follow it to where you need to go. Don’t rely on cell phone GPS systems which, in a big enough emergency, may not function.
• Waterproof hiking boots, two pairs of socks, lightweight rain gear and a sweater or polar-fleece pullover to stay warm.
• Six or eight protein bars and two liters of water, enough to keep your energy up and keep you hydrated on your hike.
• Two dust-proof painter’s masks which may reduce the effect of a biological or chemical attack.
• A small flashlight and first-aid kit including a stretchable cloth bandage to brace sprains.
• A multi-purpose “leatherman” tool and a 20-foot length of clothesline.
• If your home is more than ten miles from your place of work, you need a poncho or space blanket to hunker down in overnight; and
• If you can carry it legally, a weapon of your choice be it a can of pepper spray or a pistol. (Don’t leave that unsecured in any office even during the day.)

Found this over at Knowledge Is Power the other day and thought that this really needs to get more exposure. Seriously, watch the whole thing and spread it.

Even as we mull the relative immanent damnation or salvation of our country there is still time to pause and enjoy some of the cool things we have now.  One of which is a trance hit from a couple years ago – Who Will Find Me by DJ Shah featuring Adrina Thorpe.  This is the soft acoustic version, so even if you’re not a big fan of the heavier beat dance / trance stuff you’ll still like this one:

One of the things I like about this genre of music is the tendency for artists to make multiple versions of their best songs.  This one has at least seven that I know of, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find still other versions out there remixed by other artists as well.  I always enjoy listening to different takes on songs that I really like.

Thanks for the visits and I’ll type some more at you later.

 The Litany Against Cake*

I must not eat cake.
Cake is the diet-killer.
Cake is the big-sugar that brings total obliteration.
I will face the cake.
I will permit it to pass by me but not through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its pudgy path.
Where the cake has gone there will be nothing.
Only the diet will remain.

*Apologies to Frank Herbert

The time of “Oh Woe Is Us” & “We’re All Doomed” is done.  The communist rats eating away at our freedoms would love nothing more than for us to roll over and die.  Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

In the immortal words of Commander Taggart:  “Never give up!  Never surrender!”

It’s time for us to get off our butts and do something about this.  It’s not enough to sit around and post snarky stuff on blogs and forums.  And thinking of new ways to say “Fuck you!” to liberals, while amusing and cathartic perhaps, doesn’t really do anything to advance our causes.  This isn’t meant as a slap at anyone, so don’t think it’s directed at you.  This is as much as a call to action for myself than for anyone else.  Perhaps things have gone too far to be pulled back, but we HAVE to try.  We HAVE to fight!  For far too long our side was willing to merely play defense against the relentless attack by the Left.  We can’t do that anymore.  We can no longer rely on simple inertia to resist the cancerous Change that the socialists want to inflict on our society.  Things are too mobile for that now, too fluid.  We have to harness this fluid dynamic for our causes: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Evil never rests, and neither should we.  To give in to despair is to give Evil a home in our souls.  Root that shit out and dedicate yourself to actually doing something about this.  Sniping from the sidelines is no longer an option.

Remember that even the very wise cannot see all ends.  And who knows – maybe an intrepid, plucky hobbit will defy all odds and drop Barack Obama into the fires of Mount Doom and save us all from the soul-crushing evil he and his minions have planned for us.
