This evening I went out to dinner with The Parental Units for Mother’s Day. Yes it’s tomorrow but Mom wanted to do it early to avoid the official Mother’s Day crowds. We had a really good dinner at Carrabba’s. Afterwards The Parental Units asked me a question that rocked me back on my heels: “Would you like to buy our house? We’ll give you a good deal on it.”

As y’all know we’re in Las Vegas which is pretty much Ground Zero of the housing bubble. I bought almost at the very top, and they bought while it was coming down, but before the real crash so we’re all in the situation where we’re “underwater” and owe more than our respective houses are worth. Their place is much, much nicer, considerably bigger and in a hell of a lot better neighborhood than mine. A few months ago I was surprised when I found out that their mortgage payment isn’t all that much more than mine. Of course they put a lot more on the down payment so they don’t owe proportionally as much as I do. They like their house a lot and have done a bunch of things to make it even nicer but it’s a two-story house. They’re getting on in years and my Mom has trouble getting up and down the stairs with her back and leg issues. She really hates those stairs, but 2nd floor is where all her quilting stuff is and where she spends most of her time. Dad doesn’t care much for the stairs either. They want to downsize anyway; it’s just too much stuff to take care of.

Still, I can’t sell my place for what these homes are going for and then make payments on the remainder of my mortgage, and make the mortgage payment on what their house can sell for at it’s current price. I make a pretty good living, but not that good. No we haven’t run the numbers on that but I don’t have to. A quick mental swag easily shows that I’m not even in the ballpark. But…they really want out of that house and also to help me out of my situation. Basically they’re indicating that they’re willing to take a big enough hit on their house to the point that I can afford both of the payments. Yeah, they have the financial reserves to do that. In effect they’re offering to give me a hefty chunk of what they were going to pass on early. We’ll need to sit down and work everything out to make sure that this is actually do-able and the other details, but…yeah, I’m taking the deal. I’ll need every penny I can scrape and save though so any and all Yorling is right out for the foreseeable future: no more Saddleback Leather, and certainly no motorcycle.

They’re also throwing in the pool table. It’s a very nice pool table. And the house has installed library shelving that Dad put in. I’m still trying to wrap my head around this.

I now have a wireless internet access point set up for my home!  The security was a bit of a pain to set up, but I have at least password protection and the firewall set up.  There are some stronger measures I can take and I’ll look at those too.  One setting is that the WAP is invisible to any computer that isn’t named the same as the modem and another where it only allows access to a list of defined MACs.  After some poking around I managed to find out what that MAC is for this computer and where the system name is set.  Thank goodness I took a computer networking class a few years ago or I’d be completely lost.  Anyway, now I can be downstairs watching TV AND surf the net!  My enslackerification continues.

Now I have a cable modem for my xbox and I can start getting into xbox live!  Hmm.  Well I just had a thought.  I have one cable modem upstairs, so how is another active cable modem on the same system going to work?  Can it work?  Maybe not.  When I got this new one I had to first go over to COX to get the new modem set up before I could get access to anything else.  I betcha I can only have one of these things running at a time.  Now, I could put the new wireless modem downstairs and have the xbox connected via UBS and freerange with the laptop elsewhere.  Well, no that’s not going to work with the TV downstairs.  I could put in a splitter, but then I could only have TV and regular xbox but no internet and xbox live, or I can have internet AND xbox live but no cable TV.  Ehhhh, no.  That’s not going to work.  OK, I can put the old modem downstairs on the xbox, put in a splitter and make sure I only have one of the modems running at any one time.  I guess that might work.  We’ll find out, I guess.

I’ve decided to go ahead and get the dang thing:  an Xbox 360.  I’m sick of not being able to play all these cool games they have out now.  Anybody have any suggestions for favorite games to get?

Hallo!  I have BIG PROBLEMS with the home computer so I can’t blog from there and it’s been extra-super busy at work.  The home system seems to have some nasty bug that evaded my anti-virus and has put a strangle-hold on my internet use.  I get kicked off every minute or two and have to unconnect then reconnect to get it back.  Anybody ever have this?  That, and the fact that it takes 30 – 120 minutes for it to start up after a shut down.  BAH!  I’m tempted to go out and get a new system, frankly.  I dunno.

Anyway, I hope to have pictures of the sculpture projects up sometime as well as some other stuff.

Oh, here’s one thing:  my netflix queue is empty.  Any suggestions?  Good stuff you’ve seen recently, or remember some old gems that everyone should see?  I watched “Sunset Blvd.” for the first time a couple months ago from a recommendation from Stoat Weasel.  Good stuff!

Just really busy at work and at class until nearly 10:00 pm and my computer at home giving me fits.  I dare not turn it off anymore – it takes 2+ hours to boot up.  I don’t know what the problem is either.

Some updates:  I finished my paper project barely on time – just before class started in fact.  I threw some bug thing together with tubes.  B+ for a grade.  I’ll take it.  (All of my pictures are at home so I’ll throw those up later).  We started our wire shoe sculptures and mine is going well.  I hope to mostly finish it tonight.

We have our next project as well – plaster carving.  We have to meld some organic shape with some sort of man-made shape.  We all had to come up with 10 ideas for each.    First an organic form was selected from each of our lists by the instructor.  Mine was ram’s horns.  We then found out that we were NOT going to use the selected form from our list, but that someone else would get it.  We then went through the man-made form lists with the same expectation, but this time we kept our man-made form.  Then we randomly drew from the pool of organic forms.  I have to sculpt something that melds snakeskin with the Mandlebrot Set.  Did you follow that?  Snakeskin =  somebody else’s idea, and Mandlebrot Set = my idea.  And we’re not allowed to do anything with color either dammit.  Could be worse – one guy in class has to do something with a seahorse and a rake.

Well, work beckons.  Type at you later.  And pictures!

Fixed post so it’s not total gibberish anymore.
