Today the Army Corp of Engineers are going to blow up a levee in Missouri and flood about 130,000 acres of our farmland. Because of the Osama Bin Laden thing this is getting no interest in anything anywhere, but this will likely impact all of our lives in a few months a hell of a lot larger in terms of food prices down the road, not to mention the people who actually live and work in that area immediately. Why are they doing this? Well, ostensibly it’s to save the downstream upstream town of Cairo. This is being billed as preventing another “Katrina” except that it isn’t as the scale of the results are hardly comparable. No, this is actually for another, much more worrisome problem entirely.
Stock up on food & water folks. We’re in for Ugly Times.
Edited – this is to relieve the already Mississippi flooding in anticipation of expected additional flows that will hammer upstream flood control devices. They have to pull the plug now for the flows already coming down stream. There are additional “plugs” that may have to be pulled as it works it’s way down. This could be Real Bad.

What I’ve never understood is why those who live in FLOOD PLAINS don’t build LEVEES around their towns.
This is like socialism only it’s not taking away money to give to those who have not, but taking away land and means of income entirely for a great many more.
As an anthropologist, I understand the importance of living near a body of water back before industrialization. However, with centuries of knowledge on how the Mississippi is a meandering river, it still baffles me that major cities are built upon it.
We sure as HELL could use that water here in New Mexico! We have drought!
Wow. Reading that last link, that would be bad with a capital B. Although economy shattering, the little nihilist in me thinks it would also be entertaining with a capital E to watch.
hmmm….
i guess spring planting is going to be delayed
*mitchell get that motercicle yet?*
The Motorcycle Project is on hiatus as there has been a recent Development of Likely Significant Fiscal Consequences. I’ll post something with more details soon.
